Salesforce Admin Quick Tip: Why You Can’t See Object Tab Settings in Permission Sets
Have you ever created a new Permission Set in Salesforce, navigated to Object Settings to grant visibility to a specific tab (like Accounts), and realized the Tab Settings section is completely missing?
It’s a common frustration for Salesforce Admins and Developers. You know the setting should be there, but it just isn’t.
In this Salesforce Quick Tip, we’ll figure out exactly why this happens and how to fix it immediately.
The Problem: Missing Tab Settings
When you create a generic Permission Set without specifying a license, Salesforce sometimes hides specific interface options, including the ability to control Tab visibility.
If you go to Object Settings > [Object Name] (e.g., Account), you might see the object permissions (Read, Create, Edit), but the Tab Settings section (Available/Visible) will be completely absent.
The Solution: Assign a License
To reveal the Tab Settings, you must bind the Permission Set to a specific Salesforce license.
- Create a Permission Set: Create a new permission set via setup (you cannot edit the license of an existing permission set).
- Select a License: In the “License” dropdown menu, select Salesforce (or the specific license type relevant to the users you are assigning this to).
- Save: Click Save.
Verify the Fix
Once the license is assigned to your new permission set:
- Navigate back to Object Settings.
- Click on the Object (e.g., Account).
- You will now see the Tab Settings options appear at the top of the page, allowing you to set the tab to visibility!
