Salesforce Admin Quick Tip: How to Rename Standard Objects and Fields

As a Salesforce Admin, a request you will inevitably receive is to rename a standard object or field. Perhaps your organization refers to “Accounts” as “Households,” or they prefer “Website” over “Account Site.”

However, if you navigate to the Object Manager, find the Account object, and try to edit its label, you’ll hit a wall. Salesforce locks the Label field for standard objects and their standard fields. You simply cannot change them there.

In this Salesforce Quick Tip, we’ll go over exactly where this setting is hiding.

The “Hidden” Menu: Rename Tabs and Labels

You don’t change standard names in the Object Manager. Instead, you need to use a specific tool in Setup called Rename Tabs and Labels.

Step 1: Navigate to the Setting

  1. Go to Setup.
  2. In the Quick Find box, search for “Rename Tabs and Labels”.
  3. Click the link to open the menu.

Step 2: Select the Object

You will see a list of most standard objects (Accounts, Contacts, Leads, etc.).

  1. Find the object you want to change (e.g., Accounts).
  2. Click Edit next to that object name.

Step 3: Rename the Object

On the first screen, you can rename the object itself.

  • Singular Label: Change “Account” to “Household”.
  • Plural Label: Change “Accounts” to “Households”.
  • Click Next.

Step 4: Rename the Fields

After clicking Next, Salesforce will show you a list of all standard fields on that object. It often attempts to auto-rename fields for you (e.g., “Account Name” might automatically become “Household Name”), but you can customize this further.

  1. Locate the specific field you want to change (e.g., “Account Site”).
  2. Type your new label in the box provided (e.g., “Cool Site”).
  3. Click Save.

The Result

Once saved, navigate back to a record of that type and refresh the page. You will see your new object name in the navigation bar and header, and your new field label displayed on the page layout instantly.
